Validation & Verification

Green Sky is an independent, Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredited Validation and Verification Body (VVB) providing greenhouse gas (GHG) validation and verification in Canada and internationally.

We work with organizations navigating regulatory compliance, carbon markets, and climate disclosures, ensuring that emissions data and reduction claims are accurate, defensible, and audit-ready.

With 800+ verifications completed across Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, and 150+ offset verifications, Green Sky supports both voluntary and regulatory applications across a wide range of industries.

Independent GHG Assurance You Can Rely On

As an SCC-accredited VVB, Green Sky provides third-party assurance that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reductions, and project claims are credible and compliant with applicable standards.

We support:

  • Validation (pre-implementation)
Confirming that a project or methodology is designed correctly before it begins
  • Verification (post-implementation)
Confirming that reported emissions or reductions are accurate after the fact

Our work supports regulatory submissions, carbon credit issuance, and corporate climate reporting, ensuring that all claims can stand up to scrutiny.

A Structured, Audit-Ready Process

Our Process

Our validation and verification process is designed to be thorough, efficient, and aligned with ISO standards.

1. Scope Definition

We define the engagement scope, applicable standards, program requirements, and verification objectives.

2. Evidence gathering

We collect relevant data, documentation, and supporting evidence needed to perform the assessment.

3. Data Review & Assessment

We evaluate emissions data, methodologies, calculations, and supporting records to confirm accuracy and completeness.

4. Audit

We conduct detailed reviews, sampling, interviews, and when required site visits to verify the information provided.

5. Findings & Reporting

We identify gaps, request clarifications, resolve outstanding issues, and finalize the audit findings before preparing the verification report.

6. Verification Statement

We issue an independent verification opinion confirming the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of the reported information.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I’m running a regulated facility in Canada. Do I need GHG verification?

If you are subject to federal or provincial programs (such as TIER or OBPS), then yes, third-party GHG verification is often mandatory for compliance reporting.

I’m developing a carbon offset project. Do I need validation first?

Yes. Most carbon programs require validation before your project can be registered, and verification after reductions are generated.

I’m reporting emissions for ESG or internal purposes. Do I still need verification?

Not always required, but highly recommended. Third-party verification adds credibility and defensibility to your disclosures.

What is the difference between validation and verification?

Validation happens before a project starts to confirm it is designed correctly. Verification happens after to confirm the results are accurate.

How do you ensure energy and emissions estimates are accurate?

Green Sky uses recognized tools and standardized approaches where energy modelling or estimation is required. This includes platforms such as RETScreen®, which is used to model energy performance, evaluate conservation measures, and estimate greenhouse gas impacts.

I operate in multiple provinces. Can one verifier handle everything?

Yes. Green Sky works across AB, BC, SK, ON, and federal programs, allowing for consistent verification across jurisdictions.

I’m working on a renewable fuel or hydrogen project. Can you verify that?

Yes. We are accredited to verify projects under Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), including renewable fuels, electricity, and hydrogen pathways.

How long does the process take?

It depends on project size and complexity, but most engagements range from a few weeks to a few months.

What happens if my project or reporting doesn’t pass verification?

If gaps or non-conformities are identified during verification, they are documented and shared for correction. In many cases, issues can be addressed through clarification, updated data, or methodological adjustments.

Where additional support is needed, Green Sky also provides guidance through our consulting and training services to help organizations strengthen their reporting, improve data quality, and prepare for successful verification.

How can I better prepare for verification before starting the process?

Plan and prepare clear documentation, consistent data collection processes, and alignment with applicable program requirements. We can also support the process through our structured framework CARMS®, which helps organizations manage carbon data, reporting, and compliance readiness in a consistent and organized way.
