Offsetting from GHG emission reduction projects
I like offsetting because it can be a market mechanism to transfer money from the polluter to those in need. Often the need is a result of climate change. The planet benefits regardless of where the greenhouse gas emission reductions have occurred. For example, you and I might invest in offsetting that funds projects in Africa. Our African sisters and brothers have contributed nothing to the climate crisis. Offsetting is about climate justice. Righting an injustice.
Some common examples of emission reduction offset projects include fuel-switching, energy efficiency, and methane reductions. Electrifying is the most popular fuel-switching technology. This is often achieved by generating electricity on-site with solar or wind. Sometimes generation is supplemented with energy storage (batteries are one way to store energy; pumped hydro, compressed air, molten salt, and heated sand and more
Doing the right thing for the planet and people is helpful to recipients, meaningful to developers and pays for itself through the offsetting process.
There is an option for project developers to earn income. I want to do this as charity. It’s what I can do. What can you do?
