Your commitments – target setting for your organization

What commitments are you ready to make? Which will you embrace? At a minimum, embrace a low-carbon future. This commitment will help the planet and people. It will save you money and make you more profitable.

How can you set a target for your organization?

The following are two common and useful ways to set targets for your organization.

  • From your baseline greenhouse gas emissions in Chapter Four, determine a net-zero target by 2050, with interim targets for 2030 and 2040. The Science-based Targets Initiative suggests: 2030 would be 50% of your 2020 baseline and 2040 target would be 50% of the 2030 target. 2050 would be zero.
  • Look at the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of your country. These are submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Find your country with its targets and timelines.

Often, emission reductions will come from switching from combusting fossil fuels. Fossil fuels will get more expensive with carbon taxes. Other regulatory mechanisms designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are coming as well. The alternative technology (electricity) is more efficient and cheaper, essentially paying for itself. In addition, air pollution and other forms of pollution will also be reduced. Call that a co-benefit. There will be more jobs per megawatt (MW) in renewable power than in fossil fuel power. What are you waiting for?
