The power of your organization’s transformational plan

Plan for your organization to achieve its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Treat your plan like a process to adhere to as if it were law. It’s your organization’s law. Your commitment and obligation. This kind of planning and execution makes your organization admirable.

I have seen some fantastic plans and processes in my time. I worked in Taiwan for over 10 years. My last seven (from 1997 onward) were as a Lead Auditor and Tutor for Lloyd’s Register (LR). LR is an eminent ISO certification body and ship classification society. A pattern had emerged in Taiwan that most start-ups followed. These mom-and-pop shops are the common model in Taiwan. That makes them very agile. “Cost down” is their motto. Their pattern was to start up a company. Then, they would get certified to ISO 9001, the quality management system. Next, they would be certified to ISO 14001, the environmental management system. Companies would start selling to brand names from Japan, the European Union and the United States.

This certification is like the American Express card ad. You recall the person coming out of the jungle into civilization. The person’s clothes are torn and tattered. He is initially shunned by the hotel staff. Then the AMEX card comes out and it’s all smiles and “welcome Sir”. How do they get their foot in the door of the big brands? “Here is my ISO certification.” Welcome! It’s like a Harvard MBA. It’s not who you know that matters, but who knows you.

You might be thinking, “We already have a plan, and it doesn’t include lowering emissions.” Change it!
