The best way to predict the future is to create it. — Peter Drucker
What the people needÂ
Think about life for people by 2050 or the end game – the state after a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. Formerly it crawled, and now it flies. What is that vision for your organization? Â
Vision is about knowing what the future holds, then planning to get to that future. Â
You know the climate is changing in certain ways. That can help you predict the future. Â
“Begin with the end in mind,” says Stephen Covey, the management guru. You must know what the end looks like. How can life be better? Here is a brief story of my father’s vision for my future. Â
I wanted to follow friends into work and fun after high school. My Dad wanted me to go to university. Every day during the summer of 1975, my Dad would tell me to go register as he headed off to work. I would say okay. When he returned from work, he would ask if I registered. I would say no. We would argue. It was miserable. That cycle repeated every day until the last day of registration. Â
On the morning of the last day, Dad told me, “This is the last day to register. You had better register!” I said, “Okay.” Of course, I did not register, thinking I was finally going to be rid of his daily nagging. He came home that night and as usual, asked if I registered. I said a defiant “NO!” and expected a massive argument. He said, “I registered for you!” I can still feel the wind going out of my sails as I realized my life had just changed. You need that kind of determination to overcome the inertia of the status quo in your organization.Â
